Spring sitting ends with Greens standing up for Islanders and our Island home
Charlottetown, PE – The spring sitting ended today with the Greens being the only Party in the province to stand up for Islanders and make the necessary changes to improve our Island home. While the Greens put forward concrete solutions that will make a real, positive difference, the PC government spent the sitting avoiding accountability to Islanders, refusing to be transparent, and spending Islanders’ money irresponsibly with little to no oversight.
Here are some of the key takeaways from the spring sitting:
- Green Interim Leader Karla Bernard passed a bill to increase transparency and accountability regarding sexual misconduct complaints in Island schools.
- Green MLA Matt MacFarlane passed a bill to help protect farmland and keep this precious resource available to future generations of farmers while ensuring that farmers retain control over their land.
- A Green motion calling on government to immediately hire more school-based counsellors to ensure a minimum of one full-time counsellor per school passed unanimously.
- A Green motion calling on government to do more to support the next generation of farmers on PEI passed unanimously.
- Debated Green motions calling on government to review ambulance coverage and response times, and calling on government to provide full transparency in private healthcare contracts.
“While the PC government stumbled through this sitting with no clear plan to meaningfully address US tariffs, the healthcare crisis, school safety, the cost of living, housing affordability, or climate change and land protection, the Green caucus took it upon ourselves to put forward bills, motions, and questions that will actually make a difference,” said Karla Bernard. “And we didn’t just put forward those ideas, we had the support of the public and we got them passed.”
The Green caucus will continue to listen to Islanders, bring their concerns to the Legislative Assembly, and put those ideas into action.
