Statement from Matt MacFarlane on Evergreen Village in Summerside

Charlottetown, PE – Nearly a year has passed since the Minister of Housing stood before cameras and assured residents of Evergreen Village that the government would step in to secure their homes. But today, after months of silence and inaction, those same residents are still living in uncertainty of losing their homes. No deal has been made, no concrete plans have been shared, and no clarity has been offered. And meanwhile, essential maintenance and repairs in the mobile home park have not been completed, including critical electrical infrastructure repairs and upgrades.

I’ve spoken directly with residents who are tired, anxious, and feeling abandoned. They deserve better than broken promises when it comes to something as important and fundamental as their homes, homes that they have paid fair value to purchase and lot rent for those homes that they have paid monthly to the landlord.
This is not just about Evergreen Village. It shows a disturbing trend of Ministers in this government who say the right thing but choose not to follow through with the necessary action. We need government to work for Islanders, not just tell them what they want to hear.

On October 4, 2024 I called on government to purchase the park to give the residents the comfort and stability of knowing that they would be able to keep their homes. Housing Minister Steven Myers said he was “100% on board” with the idea, and said he was quite confident that he would have a deal complete within a week and by Christmas of 2024 at the latest.

I have written to Minister Myers requesting an immediate update on the status of the proposed purchase. I am disappointed that so much time has passed and we’ve had no deal and not even an update provided to residents. It is unacceptable that this situation has been allowed to drag out for so long with no resolution in sight.

It’s past time that government was able to implement a solution for the fifty-seven families who are facing yet another fall and winter of uncertainty over their homes.
