Statement from MLA Karla Bernard: This government has failed our Island schools
Charlottetown, PE – Over the past few years our office has heard from countless teachers, EAs and staff who are crying out for help. Last September the PEI Teachers Federation gave a shocking presentation to the Legislative Committee responsible for education on the rise of violence in our public schools, calling it an “epidemic.” Those on the ground know that our system isn’t working for teachers or their students and something needs to change.
This is not a new challenge, but one that government has been aware of for years. In response to the issues that teachers and parents were bringing forward, government commissioned a review of inclusive education. The resulting report and recommendations were submitted to government in November of 2023. Almost two years ago. This report was created through extensive consultation with educators, experts, parents, and students. From this report an Action Plan was developed through even more consultation and released in the fall of 2024. It provides a path to address urgent issues like class composition, student complexity, and staff burnout. But once again, this government has shelved a well-developed plan, leaving teachers overwhelmed and students underserved.
This isn’t a matter of red tape or resources, it’s a matter of political will. And this government has shown again and again that when it comes to education, it simply won’t act unless it’s forced to.
Our schools are the foundation of our communities. But without leadership, without accountability, and without action, that foundation is cracking and our children, educators, and families are the ones paying the price.
I’m calling on the Minister of Education and Premier to finally take real action on this issue. We know what changes need to be made to improve the education experience for Island students. Islanders deserve a government that doesn’t just spend tax dollars on reports, but follows through with action that delivers real results.
