Matt MacFarlane tabling bill to make land investigations public to Islanders
Charlottetown, PE – Today Matt MacFarlane, Leader of the Green Party of PEI, announced he is tabling a bill to make land investigations public to Islanders, increase transparency, and help remove the shroud of secrecy around IRAC and government. The bill, which is an amendment to the Lands Protection Act, would make all final reports and supporting documents of investigations under the Act public.
“PC and Liberal governments have allowed IRAC to operate in total secrecy when it comes to land for years. This lack of transparency breeds mistrust and confusion,” said MacFarlane.
“The recent discovery that the 2018 IRAC investigative land report does not exist shattered Islanders trust in the IRAC process. Making all final reports and supporting documents on land investigations automatically public will help to rebuild that trust and hold both government and IRAC accountable to Islanders.”
This is one important step to ensure that Islanders get the transparency and accountability they deserve. MacFarlane plans to bring a number of solutions to the Legislature during the fall sitting to finally improve land transparency and ensure that our Lands Protection Act is being administered fairly.
The consultation draft of the bill is now available for public review and feedback. MacFarlane will also be hosting a public meeting to discuss his bill and other pressing land issues.
