Statement from Matt MacFarlane on government call for federal investigation into allegations of foreign interference and money laundering on PEI
Charlottetown, PE – Today we finally saw the PC government acknowledge, after years of ignoring Islanders and growing evidence, the need for an investigation into allegations of foreign interference and money laundering connected to Buddhist organizations operating in Prince Edward Island.
It’s about time. This issue has been creating division, rifts, and controversy in our province and in our communities for over a decade – and in the past couple of years it has reached a fever pitch.
I’ve been raising this issue since being elected almost two years ago. Despite my best efforts, I have received no acknowledgement or support from this government, in particular its MLAs representing eastern PEI, that these concerns would be taken seriously.
The PC government has known about these concerns since at least the 2019 election campaign, where they were brought up at the doors of all MLAs in Kings County. But instead of taking action years ago on behalf of the very people they were elected to represent, the PCs sat silently as division and anger was sowed amongst neighbours and communities became fractured.
The government’s letters to the RCMP and FINTRAC are just one step. And this step alone is not going to be good enough. Successive PC and Liberal governments have turned a blind eye and allowed this situation to fester for too long. What else will this government do to ensure appropriate action is taken and Islanders’ trust is restored? Will the Premier and Minister be following up with these federal bodies to ensure action is taken?
Islanders deserve the truth, and they deserve a decisive government that acts swiftly on issues of importance to Islanders, before more trust is allowed to erode in our institutions and more fractures are allowed to happen within our communities.
