Matt MacFarlane tabling bill to make long-term care rates fair and predictable for Islanders

Charlottetown, PE – Today Matt MacFarlane, Leader of the Green Party of PEI, announced he will be tabling a bill during the upcoming sitting of the legislature that will make long-term care rates fair and predictable for Islanders. The bill, which is an amendment to the Community Care Facilities and Nursing Homes Act, would add a requirement for government to set maximum daily rates for accommodations annually beginning on July 1, 2026.

“This issue has been brought to our caucus by a number of Islanders who have found the unpredictability of the current approach stressful and unmanageable. Some seniors living in long-term care have seen their rate increase by at least 24% within a year, which amounts to an increase of $1,000 a month,” said Matt MacFarlane. “Islanders living in long-term care and community care, as well as their families, deserve peace of mind knowing when rates will increase and by how much.”

Despite PEI having rent control measures for residential tenancies that protect Islanders from exorbitant rent increases, seniors living in long-term care facilities remain unprotected from these substantial cost hikes. Instead, these Islanders are at the mercy of whatever rent increases the government may decide to impose.

“As the only province in Canada with no regulations or parameters on costs for Long-Term Care or Community Care, it is important to provide residents with a level of consistency and predictability, said MacFarlane. “This is something I’ve been calling on the PC government to address for years. It’s time to take action and ensure that seniors have access to the affordable and stable care they deserve.”

The consultation draft of the bill is now available for public review and feedback. Islanders can share their feedback by emailing greencaucus@assembly.pe.ca.
