Matt MacFarlane passes bill to help rein in reckless government spending

Charlottetown, PE – Today Green Leader Matt MacFarlane passed a bill to help rein in the PC government’s reckless spending, specifically its use of special warrants.

“Every year we see the PC government use special warrants more and more as a way to present unrealistic budgets with lower deficits,” said MacFarlane. “Instead of doing the hard work and budgeting transparently, practically and realistically, the Lantz government uses special warrants to avoid accountability.”

The bill, which is an amendment to the Financial Administration Act, adds the requirement that a payment pursuant to a special warrant be first deemed to be “urgently required.”

“In the absence of leadership from the Premier and the Minister of Finance concerning our province’s ballooning debt, I am happy to see my bill get support from the legislature,” said MacFarlane. “This small but significant change will add another layer of accountability regarding government’s use, and misuse, of special warrants. Given our province’s precarious financial situation we have to do everything we can to get our financial house in order and stop the abuse of special warrants.”

This bill brings PEI in line with other jurisdictions in Canada and will allow MLAs in the Legislative Assembly the ability to further hold government accountable for its spending.
