Official Opposition responds to PEI Partnership for Growth Economic Action Plan
Charlottetown, PE – With the release of the PEI Partnership for Growth economic action plan today, the Island’s business community has outlined its economic vision for Prince Edward Island.
“I was pleased to see the plan recognize that the well-being of all Islanders is critical, and that livable wages, affordable housing, and access to critical services like health care will be central to that prosperous future,” said Peter Bevan-Baker, Leader of the Official Opposition Green Caucus. “Our caucus could not agree more.”
Yet there is something conspicuously missing in the process.
“The role of government is to create an environment where small businesses and communities can succeed,” said Trish Altass, Official Opposition Green Caucus Critic for Economic Growth, Tourism and Culture. “We have not seen the necessary action or planning from this government that workers and businesses need to thrive.”
Strong housing, health care, education, and other public services are the foundations of a vibrant economy, and the King Government has largely failed to build or protect these services.
“We’ve seen significant growth in the economy in recent years, but at the same time we’ve had some of the lowest wage growth in the country,” said Altass. “Islanders deserve to see the benefits of that increased prosperity, and it is the government’s job to ensure that happens.”
With proper support by government, economic growth can contribute positively to the well-being of people. For this reason, it is absolutely necessary for government to have a clear, supportive vision for our province.
“Islanders and the business community have come to the table to do business,” said Bevan-Baker. “It is time for the King government to do the same and to start showing leadership and pride in creating a better, cleaner, more resilient PEI.”
