Green Motion to Eliminate Bridge and Ferry Tolls for Islanders Travelling Off-Island for Medical Appointments Passes Unanimously

Charlottetown, PE – Today a Green motion calling on government to eliminate bridge and ferry tolls for Islanders who must travel off-Island for medical appointments passed unanimously in the Legislative Assembly.

“Today’s unanimous vote is a clear signal that all MLAs agree: Islanders who are required to travel for essential medical care should not be required to pay to leave the province,” said MLA Matt MacFarlane, who sponsored the motion. “Accessing healthcare is already challenging for many, and the added burden of a $50 to $90 toll only adds to the financial strain on patients and their families.”

MacFarlane emphasized that off-Island travel is often unavoidable for Islanders due to the lack of certain specialized medical services on PEI. He also noted that eliminating tolls for patients would not add unreasonable financial strain on the provincial budget.

“I’ve heard from countless constituents who are struggling with the costs of travel, accommodations, and meals when seeking care outside the province,” said MacFarlane. “This motion is a step toward removing these unnecessary hardships. I look forward to seeing the government act on this decision of the House without delay.”

MacFarlane expressed his gratitude to his legislative colleagues for their support. He also noted that Islanders will be expecting to see funding for this simple but meaningful financial relief in the upcoming operational budget this spring.

“Our healthcare system must work for everyone, no matter where they live or what care they need,” said MacFarlane. “I will continue to advocate for policies that make healthcare more accessible and equitable for all Islanders.”
