Matt MacFarlane Calls for Legislative Committees to Continue Work Despite Prorogation
Charlottetown, PE – MLA Matt MacFarlane is calling on his legislative colleagues to continue the important work of government through standing committees, despite Premier Rob Lantz’s decision to prorogue the legislature and stall key legislative business.
“I have confirmed with the Clerk of the Legislature that committee work can continue during prorogation,” said MacFarlane. “The new Premier Lantz has effectively put a halt to legislative scrutiny, shutting down the only venue where Islanders can hear their government defend its actions and explain its plans. Islanders deserve transparency, and our committees must continue to do the work that Islanders expect of us.”
MacFarlane has formally written to the Chair of the Standing Committee on Education and Economic Growth requesting an urgent meeting to address two critical issues facing Islanders.
First, the committee must discuss the looming threat of U.S. tariffs, which are set to take effect on March 4th. The economic implications of these tariffs could be severe, and Islanders deserve to know what steps the provincial government is taking to address them and mitigate potential damage to local industries.
Second, the committee must examine the ongoing issues with our province’s electrical grid, in particular Maritime Electric’s failing infrastructure and the resulting issues it has caused for Summerside’s utility. The reliability and affordability of electricity are essential for residents and businesses alike, and these issues require immediate attention.
“At a time when Islanders are facing rising costs and economic uncertainty, Premier Lantz’s decision to prorogue the legislature is irresponsible,” said MacFarlane. “Legislative committees have a duty to continue their work and ensure that Islanders receive the answers they deserve.”
MacFarlane urges the Standing Committee on Education and Economic Growth to convene at the earliest possible opportunity and continue the essential work of the legislature.
