PC government’s operating budget overspends and underdelivers for Islanders

Charlottetown, PE – The PC government’s 2025 operating budget reveals a directionless and out of touch government that continues to overspend taxpayer money, all while failing to invest in the programs and services that would build a strong and resilient economy for our province.

“At this time of great economic uncertainty here at home and around the world, Islanders expect a government with a bold and decisive vision, one that has been laying the groundwork and future-proofing our economy,” said Peter Bevan-Baker, Third Party Critic for Finance. “Unfortunately, for six years this government has overspent on the wrong things and completely neglected investing in our public systems – in healthcare, education and housing.”

“There’s a popular saying in Scotland – ‘penny wise, pound foolish.’ It refers to those who are deeply concerned about spending small amounts of money, but totally careless and reckless when it comes to spending large sums,” said Bevan-Baker. “This government will spend millions upon millions on secretive NHL deals and contracts with private consulting firms in Toronto. But when it comes to putting investments into the things that would make a real difference for Islanders, they close their wallet.”

Now is the time to build a new Island economy that is more resilient and nimble, one that is less tied to unstable and unreliable partners, and that will create great jobs, provide good incomes, and protect our communities and Island way of life.

Islanders need and deserve a government, an economy and a future that promises hope, and delivers improved quality of life for all who call Prince Edward Island home.
