Statement on Tragedy in Nova Scotia
Opposition Green Caucus
April 20, 2020

This past weekend has shaken the Atlantic region with the impact felt throughout the country. Many Islanders are closely connected with individuals who have either lost their lives, or someone they love in the senseless acts of violence in Nova Scotia.

There are no words adequate enough to convey how I feel. I cannot begin to imagine the depth of sorrow and grief being felt by friends, neighbours, and family members. The enormity of the tragedy is still being revealed.

This pain and fear is, if at all possible, made more unbearable by the need for us to be physically apart as we deal with another threat to our health and wellbeing.

However, though we may not be able to hold each other physically, we can still be together in our grief. We can visit and comfort one another with a call, a video, a note, or a gift left on the doorstep.

I also offer my utmost thanks to the RCMP and first responders who were on the frontlines this past weekend during the unfolding and aftermath of this tragedy. We are ever grateful for those who are willing each and every day to put their own lives and safety at risk for our own. Thank you.

I encourage each and every one who needs support to, please, reach out. Call a friend or family member. Reach out to your local mental health service.
