Greens call on government to immediately freeze property tax increase and to add more money to the School Lunch program
Charlottetown, PE – Islanders woke up this morning to more bad news about the soaring cost of living. News broke that the residential property tax will be increasing the maximum of 5% again this year. Islanders also learned there is greater financial strain on the school lunch program with less Islanders being able to pay for the service. This is forcing the program to make changes to their menu to save costs.
“Islanders are facing compounding difficulties with the continued high cost of living,” said Peter Bevan-Baker, Leader of the Official Opposition Green Caucus. “We need to deliver help immediately so people can meet their most basic needs of food and shelter.”
The Official Opposition Green Caucus is calling on government to immediately:
- Freeze the amount of residential property tax Islanders pay for this year by providing a rebate equal to the increase. Islanders cannot afford another major increase to the cost of keeping a roof over their heads. Government should also make sure that municipalities, which depend on property tax revenues, do not see a reduction in revenues.
- Give more money to the school food lunch program so food quality does not have to suffer because food costs have gone up. This would make sure Island children continue to receive healthy meals.
“I am asking Premier King to not wait a moment longer. Put these supports in now.”
