MLA Karla Bernard Calls on King Government to Support Local Businesses Impacted By Upcoming Victoria Row Construction
Charlottetown, PE – Karla Bernard, MLA for Charlottetown-Victoria Park and Leader of the Third Party, is calling on the King government to better support local businesses who may be impacted by the upcoming Victoria Row construction that is set to begin this October.
Bernard is calling on government to put in place a contingency fund to be administered should local businesses on Victoria Row see a detrimental and notable impact to their business due to the construction.
“I’ve heard from many business owners on Victoria Row who are in support of the Confederation Centre’s project and what will ultimately be a great addition to our city, but who are also worried about how this construction will impact their business, particularly during the busy summer season,” said Bernard. “Government has the ability to put some of these worries to rest by putting in place a fund that businesses can apply for if they do end up seeing an impact to their bottom line.”
The proposed contingency fund should be developed by the Department of Economic Development in consultation with impacted businesses.
“The last few years through COVID have been extremely difficult for local businesses,” said Bernard. “Everyone wants to see Victoria Row remain vibrant and active all year long and we want to make sure that business owners and their employees have the proper support to continue to be part of our community for years to come.”
